Growing up in Ristiina by Lake Saimaa, Saila Tiihonen became familiar with the UPM Pellos plywood mills at a young age. A long-standing and important employer in the region, UPM Pellos began operations as a chipboard mill in 1964. Since then, it has gone on to become the largest manufacturer of softwood plywood in Europe.

Desde 2008, la compañía holandesa BTG BioLiquids (BTG-BTL) y la multinacional británica TechnipFMC, asociada principalmente a procesos tecnológicos en torno a los combustibles fósiles, trabajan en el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías de producción de biocarburantes. Ambas anuncian que el conseguido a partir de madera y un proceso que emplea pirólisis rápida tendrá su primera fábrica de producción lista en Suecia para 2021. No sería la primera que produce biocarburantes a partir de madera, ya que al menos una de UPM en Finlandia lo hace desde 2015.

UPM maintains its industry leader position in the global Dow Jones Sustainability Index
