Supreme Court rejected appeal application from Metsähallitus in forest cartel compensation case - "Hearing would have been very important"
Summary:
The Supreme Court did not give Metsähallitus permission to appeal in the raw wood cartel case. The decision by the Helsinki Court of Appeals will remain in effect. Metsähallitus chairman Timo Laitinen says that it would have been important to have this socially significant and complex case heard by the highest court in the land. In 2004, an investigation was launched based on a tip-off from UPM. According to the market court, forest companies UPM, Stora Enso and Metsäliitto operated an illegal cartel between 1997-2004. They were ordered to pay 50 million EUR in fines.

Forest industry won all the way in cartel case
Summary:
The Supreme Court will not take up Metsähallitus' demands in the timber cartel case. Aproximately 500 private forest owners, over 30 municipalities and Metsähallitus have litigated against Finland's three major forest companies for several years. They have all claimed compensation due to the wood cartel maintained by Metsäliitto, UPM and Stora Enso between 1997 and 2004. The ruling in the district court and in the court of appeal has in all cases been the same: It has not been possible to prove that those who sold timber to the companies suffered losses due to the cartel. The case is now closed. The Supreme Court on Tuesday announced that it will not take up Metsähallitus's appeal.

Le projet européen de recherche Carbon4PUR, qui vise à produire à partir d’effluents gazeux industriels des polyols, est entré dans sa phase industrielle. Après avoir réussi à obtenir ces composés en laboratoire, le consortium du projet a débuté l’évaluation des conditions pour la réalisation d’un pilote de production. Les essais de production industrielle sont prévus d’être réalisés sur la plateforme de Fos-sur-Mer. The Cross-Flow Shredder QZ will be the centerpiece of the new plant and process refrigerators and freezers with a piece weight of up to 100 kg. Start-up for the new recycling plant is scheduled for spring 2019.

Puerto de Santos, el mayor de toda América Latina, batió récord de transporte de cargas en 2018
El puerto brasileño de Santos, situado en el litoral del estado de Sao Paulo (sureste de Brasil), el mayor de toda América Latina, batió en 2018 su récord de movimientos de cargas, con 133,1 millones de toneladas, lo que representa un incremento del 2,5 por ciento en comparación con 2017, informó hoy la estatal Compañía de las Docas de Sao Paulo (Codesp), encargada de su administración.
Según la Codesp, la soja fue la principal responsable del aumento del transporte de cargas en el puerto de Santos, con 94,34 millones de toneladas embarcadas, cifra récord y que supone además un aumento del 0,8 por ciento frente a 2017.

Heinäveden Koneurakointi has 50 years of experience of forest work. The company carries out felling mainly for the customers of Metsä Group. According to Pasi Mikkonen, he has never encountered a forest where continuous culture is practised. Arto Kaipainen, a forest expert at Stora Enso Metsä, agrees with Mr Mikkonen. They have only received one tender on exploitation felling. Mr Kaipainen says that the wood buyer carries out the felling based on the model agreed with the forest owner. The price paid for wood gained in exploitation felling is not the same as in clear felling, he adds. In practise, often part of the work is carried out as exploitation felling due to landscape reasons.
